Since its launch last October 2008 Google Mapmaker, one of the latest products from the search engine giant Google, has made significant progress thanks to the community Filipino map-makers or shall we say “cartographers” who shared their local knowledge and information necessary for updating Philippines’ map database over in this popular website.

Derek Callow of Google SE Asia
Derek Callow, Marketing head of Google South East Asia said that the Philippines is one of the top performing countries in terms of progress in adding up data in the said program during a product update press conference in Ascott Makati last 12th of March 2009.
“There’s a long way to go…” Callow said, referring to the still large areas of the Philippines still lacking the necessary data for publication at Google Maps which in turn will be used by the public over the net.
Launched in 2008, its aim was to add up detailed information on Google Map’s reference for certain countries that have less or no digital cartographic and graphic information of a certain locality or place. It relies on local knowledge and peer moderation as Google believes that local knowledge contributes a lot in adding up information to the maps that are more reliable at the same time
